Biography

He was brought up in the Page Corps , from where he was assigned to the Preobrazhensky Regiment . He graduated as a high school student from the Law Faculty of Moscow University [2] [3] . He was involved on August 2, 1849 in the case of Petrashevists ; “Recognized as not guilty, subjected to secret surveillance from August 23, 1849” [2] .

He began his literary work in the mid-1840s with translations, small poems and compilation articles on history in the “ Son of the Fatherland ”, “ Finnish Bulletin ”, “ St. Petersburg Gazette ”, “Literary Newspaper” and various almanacs. In the last years of the existence of The Finnish Bulletin, renamed Northern Review in 1848, he was the actual editor of this magazine, where under the pseudonym V. Borshov he placed the story Lyubinka (published in 1851 as a separate edition) and a number of narrative essays and reviews . His novels, short stories, and essays (Panfil Ivanovich, Coachmen, Petersburg Savoyards, Lineets, Mr. Pukhlikov, Rubensova Head, etc.) were published in Pantheon , Family Circle , and Son of the Fatherland ”,“ Light Painting ”and other publications. He wrote a lot on the history of painting and was the first compiler of the biographical essays of Aivazovsky, Bruni, A.A. Ivanov, Count F.P. Tolstoy, Vasin, Kiprensky, Zavyalov, Stavasser , Kokorin, Voronikhin, F. Miller, Zaryanko, Mokritsky, Baron P.K. Klodt et al.

VV Tolbin collaborated in the satirical magazine Iskra , where he created a whole gallery of Russian eccentrics, wits and tyrants. In the early 1860s, he was a feuilleton player of the Northern Bee of St. Petersburg Vedomosti, of the Russian Disabled ; to this time belong some of his poems, which were in manuscripts and partly placed in Herzen’s “ Bell ”. Author of the travel essay Revel and Helsingfors (1858).

He died on February 7 ( 19 ), 1869 [4] from the consequences of alcohol abuse. The same fate befell his close acquaintance N.I. Krol . He was buried in St. Petersburg at the Mitrofanievsky cemetery .
