Iodine oxides

Diiodo Pentaoxide Molecule (I 2 O 5 )

Iodine oxides are binary chemical compounds of iodine and oxygen . Only some of the theoretically possible iodine oxides were isolated in pure form. A number of compounds, probably iodine oxides, have been detected in the atmosphere; these compounds are considered an important factor in the exchange of iodine between the ocean and the atmosphere [1] .

Diode monoxide was not experimentally observed, it was studied theoretically [4] , however, there are indications of the possibility of its synthesis in the same way that dichloro monoxide is synthesized in the reaction of mercury (II) oxide HgO with elemental iodine I 2 [5] . This compound is extremely unstable, but can halogen alkenes [6] .

Iodine dioxide (IO 2 ) and diiodine tetraoxide ((IO 2 ) 2 ), as well as the free radical iodine monoxide (IO) are involved in important processes in atmospheric chemistry. They are formed in very small amounts on the surface of the seas during photooxidation of diiodomethane produced by seaweeds [7] . Despite low concentrations (of the order of trillion -1 ), they are considered active catalysts for the destruction of ozone [8] [9] .

Diiodo pentoxide (I 2 O 5 ) is iodic acid anhydride (HIO 3 ) and the only stable iodine anhydride.

Tetraiodonoxide (I 4 O 9 or I (IO 3 ) 3 ) was synthesized in the gas-phase reaction of I 2 with O 3 [10] . It can be considered as iodate (V) iodine (III).
