The son of Henry I de Rodez and Alcaetta d'Escorail.
In 1230, he married Isabella de Rocfoil, daughter of Raymond I de Rocfoil and Dauphine de Turenne, Viscountry heiress Kreisel (Aveiron), Barony Meryue and Rokfoyl (Loeser).
January 18, 1236 in Montpellier brought homage for the Viscountry of Carlos to King Jaime I of Aragon (Aragon has been overlord of Carlos since 1167).
In 1242 he participated in the uprising against the king of France , Louis IX . After the conclusion of peace, he vowed to go on a crusade . He redeemed his oath by paying a relatively small amount of money for the crusade of Louis IX in 1248.
Hugo IV was the patron saint of troubadours . Among the troubadours at his court were Giraut Riquier , Sirveri de Girona and Bertrand Carbonel .
December 7, 1249 brought homage for the county of Rodez Count of Toulouse Alfonso de Poitiers and his wife Jeanne .
Bishop of Clermont (a relative of Hugo IV) gave him seignorial rights to some possessions, including the castle of La Bastide (1249).
