History

Heiligendamm owes his appearance to the Grand Duke Frederick Franz I of Mecklenburg , who founded the resort in this place in 1793 . Today, this event resembles a monument to the founder of the resort .

Since its foundation, Heiligendamm has been considered one of the most beautiful resorts in Germany.

The name “Heiligendamm” was given to the area by a large mound of stones, consisting of moraine deposits of the ice age exposed by the sea. According to legend, the embankment arose from the waters of the foaming Baltic Sea as a result of the prayers of the monks of the Cistercian order .

There is a false belief that one of the Russian tsars was resting in Heiligendamm. However, in reality, only Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna visited Heiligendamm.

Since 1949, the Heiligendamm School of Applied Arts was founded for designers in interior design , furniture , graphic design and decoration. The total number of students who completed this school by 2000 was about one and a half thousand.

During the years of the existence of the GDR, the school buildings were used in the summer as a summer camp for the children of the apparatus of the Ministry of Culture of the GDR. This practice ceased in the summer of 1990 .

In 1996, the historical part of Heiligendamm was bought by one of the divisions of the real estate company Fundus-Gruppe , which carried out the restoration of five historic buildings, turning them into five-star hotels, open for visitors since spring 2003 .

Relations between the population and hotel owners are tense [3] , as a result of the construction of hotels, some roads , parks and boardwalks were blocked for wide access. Despite the existence of a contract for the restoration of buildings not belonging to the hotel complex, this rehabilitation was not carried out. At the same time, the historic villa was demolished and the demolition or relocation of a number of old buildings and monuments was planned.

On July 13, 2006, US President George W. Bush , who was on a visit to Stralsund, spent the night in Heiligendamm.

From June 6 to 8, 2007, the G8 meeting took place in Heiligendamm. To ensure the safety of this event, 13 kilometers of barriers that went directly to the Baltic Sea [4] were erected, which were planned to be dismantled after the meeting [5] .
