Biography
Alexey Alekseevich Tikhonov was born on February 19, 1853 in the city of Barnavin, Kostroma province , into a merchant family of peasant origin [5] . Under the guidance of foreign tutors, he learned German, French and English well; then he studied at the gymnasium of the city of Kazan for some time. In 1873, having passed the final exam in Pskov , he entered the St. Petersburg Technological Institute , but soon left him, because due to his father’s illness, he had to become the head of an extensive family business enterprise [6] [7] .
For the affairs of his father's company, and later of other companies, Tikhonov had to travel a lot around Russia and abroad and even visit the New World . In the late 1870s, A. A. Tikhonov independently engaged in the export of bread and flax abroad. At first, his business was successful, but in 1881, after the events of March 1 , his foreign partners, waiting for the anarchy to ramp up, refused a loan. In 1883, A. A. Tikhonov was forced to declare bankruptcy [8] . In the same year, the first article “The Legacy of the Rich Man” was published without a signature in the Echo newspaper, which marked the beginning of his literary activity, to which he decided to completely surrender [6] .
In 1886, his first story appeared, “God Did Not Judge” (in “ Herald of Europe ”), after which he published a number of short stories, short stories, novels, dramatic works (“Beyond the Golden Fleece”, “Winter”) and poems in the “Bulletin” Europe ”,“ Northern Herald ”,“ Russian Thought ”and other periodicals [6] [9] .
Since June 1895, he was editor of the Niva magazine [6] .
In the years 1895-1900. Aleksei Alekseevich Tikhonov collected all the works he wrote in 4 volumes of “Works”. The first 3 volumes were presented by the author to the Imperial Academy of Sciences for the Pushkin Prizes and received an honorable feedback from KK Arsenyev [10] [6] .
At the beginning of 1897 he turned up from a position in the Niva magazine in order to have more time for creative work [8] .
Alexey Alekseevich Tikhonov died on October 25, 1914 in the city of Petrograd [11] [12] .
His brother Vladimir also devoted his life to literature and for one of his works he was awarded the Griboedov Prize [13] [14] .
Creativity
The creativity of Tikhonov, according to S. A. Vengerov , is generally tense. He is prone to sophistication and loves spectacular positions; even the titles of his works are for the most part elevated (“Between Two Vague Ideals”, “Police verso”, “Nocturne”, “Allmiror!”, “Return. Novel of hesitant moods”, etc.) [6] .
The greatest success was his work “ Pollice verso ” (“Finish him”) published in 1891 (German translation in “Universal Bibliothek”). These are interestingly designed “parallels”, four “panels” illustrating the psychology of the crowd [6] [15] .
