  • On March 26, 1923, the joint-stock company Ukrvozdukhput was established in Kharkov, one of the tasks of which was the organization of regular flights. On May 25, 1924, the first regular Ukrvozdukhputi passenger lines were opened: Kharkov-Poltava-Kiev and Kharkov-Kirovograd-Odessa. The unpaved runway was at that time on the northern outskirts of the city behind the city park , in Sokolniki , where the aircraft factory is now located.
  • In 1926, on the basis of the Ukrvozdukhputi aircraft workshops, an aircraft factory named after the Council of People's Commissars of the Ukrainian SSR was organized. The development of aviation production in Sokolniki required the transfer of a civilian airport. For him, a place was chosen 12 kilometers south of the city center, behind the village of Osnova .
  • In 1928, the first international flights from Kharkov to Tehran began to be carried out from Kharkov .

Kharkov-North Airport in 1924
  • The new airport went into operation on December 6, 1932 . It included a dirt runway, a two-story terminal building and other ground services.
  • In August 1933, the airport was named after P.P. Postyshev .
  • In 1936, the airport was recognized as the best in the USSR .
  • In the prewar years, transit flights made flights from Moscow and Leningrad to the Crimea and the Caucasus at the Kharkov airport. The largest passenger aircraft of those years, the six-engine giant P-124 (ANT-20bis), which operated flights Moscow - Kharkov - Mineralnye Vody, landed here.
  • In 1941, a concrete runway was built at the airport.
  • With the beginning of World War II , the airport personnel became part of the Kiev and Kharkov special air groups of the Civil Air Fleet.
  • In 1940-1941, two cement concrete strips 1000 m long and 80 m wide, taxiways and aircraft parking lots made of brick and cement concrete, an airport terminal, warehouses, two iron hangars were built at the airport. The airport was equipped with a radio beacon.
  • During the Second World War , the Kharkiv Osnova Airport was severely destroyed: the airfield, runways, taxiways, aircraft parking areas could no longer be used. Acts of the studies of that time indicate that for every 100 m there were 2-3 funnels from bombs. The hangars and the terminal building were also destroyed.
  • The existing airport terminal was built in the postwar years according to the standard design developed by the Moscow Research Institute "Aeroproject" in 1951 (architect Elkin G., Kryukov G., Mitkevich G.).
  • By the beginning of the 70s, Kharkov Airport served up to 600 thousand passengers annually, and after 10 years this figure increased to 900 thousand people. At the same time, the city came close to the airport. Therefore, the general plan of the city, developed in the late 70s - early 80s, provided for the construction of a new airport in the village. Field Dergachevsky district , which is 30 kilometers from Kharkov. In the future, the assembly plants of the aircraft factory were also planned there. The project of the new airport was developed by the Institute “Ukraeroproekt”, and the terminal - “Ukrgorstroyproekt”. The airport was planned to be connected with the city by expressway. In the late 80s, the construction of the runway began, but with the collapse of the USSR, work was interrupted.
  • In 1995, reconstruction was carried out - an overhaul of the airport building was completed, and a border control point was created. The runway was also reconstructed, as a result of which the airport was able to become a full-fledged international enterprise and was allowed to fly on IL-76 aircraft.
  • In March 2008, the entire property complex of Kharkov Airport was leased for a period of 49 to the DCH investment group of Alexander Yaroslavsky . The runway, as a strategic object, is owned by the state. Arcstone (Kharkov), under the leadership of Airport Consulting Vienna (Austria) and Airport Reseach Center (Germany), developed a project for a large-scale reconstruction of the Kharkov airport, which they began to implement in the second half of 2008 .
  • On August 28, 2010 a new terminal was opened with an area of 20,000 square meters with a capacity of 650 passengers per hour. At the same time, it was decided to reconstruct the old airport building. Today it has a VIP terminal. The preservation of retro styling was approached with special trepidation in order to preserve the history of the airport. [one]

  • Since December 1, 2010, Swissport Swissport has also been providing ground handling services (it also serves Boryspil Airport ). The company is engaged in passenger registration, transfer by bus to the aircraft, providing ramps , centering and control of aircraft loading.
  • In 2011, a new runway with a length of 2500 meters was put into operation, which can accept without restrictions all types of medium-haul aircraft and some types of long-haul aircraft. The lane is equipped according to ICAO category II, which allows Kharkiv Airport to receive aircraft in bad weather.

  • In 2012, the airport was equipped with two telescopic ramps and a new control tower .
  • In 2012, Kharkiv Airport successfully provided flight services for football teams and fans of the Euro 2012 European Football Championship. On some days, the airport load was so high that the old runway was used for aircraft parking.
  • Since 2013, the airport has a course-glide path (ILS) category II.
  • In August 2013, the airport successfully accepted the An-124 Ruslan, which has the largest take-off mass of 392 tons among the aircraft that Kharkov airport has ever received.
  • On March 2, SkyUp Airlines announced the opening of a base at the Kharkov airport.
