The son of a day laborer and washerwoman, from the age of seven, worked at a textile factory, at the age of 14 he opened his own workshop for drawing a picture on fabric, learned how to read and write by self-taught. In the early 1830s. began to appear in print with poems. In 1836, on the recommendation of Marcelina Debord-Valmore , the first noticeable publication of Lebreton's essays in periodicals took place, in 1840, thanks to the attention attracted to him, Lebreton received a place of librarian in the city library of Rouen. The authority of Lebreton in the city gradually grew, and in 1848 he was elected to the National Assembly from the Department of Maritime Seine .
Along with poems imbued with religious feeling, often devoted to the plight of the common man (especially the collection “The leisure hours of one worker”, fr. Heures de repos d'un ourier , 1837) or the merits of prominent figures of the past (in particular, Pierre Corneille ), Lebreton first of all gained fame by an extensive collection of biographical essays about the inhabitants of Rouen and Normandy ; these essays appeared in several volumes in 1857–1865. under the names "Norman biographies" ( fr. Biographie normande ) and "Rouen biographies" ( fr. Biographie rouennaise ).
The name of Lebreton was given the street in Rouen, which ceased to exist in 1972 during the reconstruction of the city center.
