History
The first coat of arms of Montevideo appeared in 1807 . It had the shape of an oval, which was crowned by a crown. In the oval was inscribed the hill of Cerro de Montevideo , standing on the shores of the Gulf of La Plata ; near the coast was also depicted a reptile . On the hill stood a tower of the fortress, symbolizing the fortified city of Montevideo built on it to fight smugglers (this symbol was later depicted on all the arms of Montevideo ). Above the tower was placed a waving ribbon with the inscription “CASTILLA ES MI CORONA” , which symbolizes the commitment of the locals to the Castile Crown .
Over time, the coat of arms has changed. The phrase "CASTILLA ES MI CORONA" began to be written outside the oval around it. At the foot of the Cerro de Montevideo , four discarded British flags appear, symbolizing Spain's victory over England . Also on the bank of the hill appeared the flag of the United Provinces of Rio de La Plata and an ear of wheat . [one]
Description
The modern coat of arms of Montevideo was approved in 1903 . It is a heraldic shield of the French form in blue, in which a small shield of the same shape is inscribed.
In the upper part of the small shield of the coat of arms on a blue field, a green hill is depicted, in the lower part of the coat of arms on a blue background there is a symbolic image of the sea.
The inscription “CON LIBERTAD NI OFENDO NI TEMO” ( rus. Being free, I do not offend and am not afraid ) is inscribed in shields of the blue frame around the circle - this is the unofficial motto of Uruguay .
The crown of the coat of arms is made in the form of a fortress wall with four towers.
Behind the stamped image there is an image of two objects crossed among themselves: an old sword and a palm branch . The emblem itself is surrounded by a wreath of laurel leaves.
