Biography
Born in the city of not to be confused with the city of Tinis , which at the time of the saint's life did not exist, in its place at that time was the village of Sa Al-Hajjar). His parents were Christians with whom he lived for 40 years, then retired to the desert, where he lived for 10 years, and then lived for another 50 years as a in [1] . He introduced the clock into liturgical practice (before him they only read Vespers and Midnight Office ).
Among all the servants of God, he considered himself the most sinful among them, in this regard, he labored in the Skitsky desert of Egypt . Once the monks came to him, asking the question: "Are you that Agafon?" With humility, he replied: "See before you the sinful servant of God ." “There is a rumor that you are a proud and restless person,” the monks continued. “Perfect truth,” the saint agreed. “We heard that you are a liar, and we love to judge others.” “And this is true,” confirmed St. Agathon. “Moreover, they say that you are a heretic ?” - the monks did not retreat. They received an instant objection: "In vain, I am not a heretic ." Then they asked the monk why he had denied the latter, the saint explained: “Those vices cannot be attributed to ourselves, because it is a nature for every man to sin, and we, by our corrupt nature, are involuntarily addicted to vices, and heresy is apostasy, unauthorized renunciation of the Truth of God . " To the question of what feats are more important for salvation, external or internal, Agathon answered: “A man is like a tree; external or bodily pursuit brings forth leaves, and spiritual occupation produces fruit. But since the Holy Scripture assures that “every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire” (Matt. 3, 10), it is clear from these words that almost all of your attention should be paid to your fruit. The tree also needs leaves in order to preserve vital juices and so that the shadow of the leaves protects the tree and fruits from the withering heat. ”
Rev. Agathon died around 435 , according to some sources, at the age of one hundred. For several days, the saint sat silently, peering intently at something. To the question of the monks about where he is looking, he answered that he sees himself in judgment before Christ . “And are you, father, afraid of the court?” They asked him. “By my strength, I obeyed the laws of the Lord, but how can a person be sure that God pleases my work?” - “Do you not hope for your good deeds, which you did by pleasing God ?” The monks persistently asked. “I do not hope until I see God . The judgment of man is one thing, and the judgment of God is another thing. ” Immediately after these words, he departed to the Lord .
