Historical Significance
Historically, the port has become the engine of economic development of Uruguay. Due to the fact that the port is located in a natural water area, it does not need to work to deepen the bottom and is suitable for ships with large draft, competing in this with the port of Buenos Aires. In addition, the port of Montevideo operates 24 hours a day year-round, due to the low probability of winds and storms, which involve the closure of the ports.

The port is subordinate to the National Port Authority of Uruguay (ANP) , the official authority that controls all the country's trading ports. Since 2006, the port has a large warehouse container for handling goods passing through the port.
Port Police has jurisdiction over the entire port of Montevideo. It conducts inspections to monitor the movement of vehicles, ensures the safety of all private and state port facilities, the fight against drug trafficking and smuggling, and fights crime in the port.
A branch [railroad] approaches the port, designed to transit goods from the port to the rest of the country.
Free port

Also, there are no restrictions on the storage time of goods, loading. Cargo receive exemption from import tax. Montevideo Port, has strived to become a HUB port, which means the commissioning of a large logistics platform for the distribution of goods in the region.
Almost 52% of containers arriving at the port are in transit, of which 90% are containers that move to Argentina and to the more southerly neighboring countries. Landlocked countries such as Paraguay and Bolivia use the Port of Montevideo to meet their shipping needs and export goods.
