History and General Information
Iranian immigrants began to move to the United States throughout the 20th century . Their flow to the United States increased sharply after the Islamic revolution in Iran in 1979 and the subsequent cultural revolution in the country [1] [2] [3] . Iranians of secular views with whole families fled from Iran to other countries, mainly to the United States and Europe . Among the immigrants were not only Persians , but also other peoples living in Iran, such as Kurds , Mazandirans , Lurs , Azeris , Armenians , and Persian Jews . According to various sources, from 300 thousand to half a million Iranian immigrants moved to the USA. A significant part of them moved to one of the areas of Los Angeles - Westwood. In the following years (1990s and 2000s), immigrants from Iran moved mostly to Los Angeles , to a fairly well-known area called Teherangeles [4] [5] [6] . Many Iranian immigrants preferred this area for easier job search and affordable housing, since the majority in the area were already settled Iranians, who also had children and grandchildren here. Many Iranians living here are second-generation immigrants, have US citizenship , like their parents, and have never been to Iran [7] .
Also, many Iranians moved to areas adjacent to Westwood. The largest part of them moved to districts, districts and small towns of Tarzana , Woodland Hills , Encino , Orange , Beverly Hills , Palm Springs .
There are frequent inscriptions in Persian alphabet in stores and other service establishments (bar, book, grocery, clothing stores, restaurants and cafes), ads on the streets. Immigrants from Iran appeared among the civil servants of the district; Iranian immigrants entered the media of the district and Westwood district and their environs. Newspapers, magazines, radio and television channels founded by Iranians appeared. Many famous Iranian singers and musicians live precisely in Teherangeles or in other surrounding areas with a predominantly Iranian population.
In 2010, the area at the intersection of Westwood Boulevard and Wilkins Avenue was officially designated by the authorities as Persian Square [8] .
In recent years, other Persian-speaking peoples from other countries, including countries belonging to the Iranian cultural continent, began to move to Teherangeles. Most of them are from Tajikistan , Uzbekistan , Afghanistan , Azerbaijan , Kurds from Iraq and Turkey .
Population
According to the data of 2010, more than 50 thousand registered residents lived in the Westwood (Teherangeles) area. More than 60% of the population are so-called whites , which include Iranian immigrants, 23% are Asians ( Chinese , Koreans , Japanese , Filipinos , Indians ), 7% are Hispanic , 2% are African American , and 4% are other races and peoples [9] .
