Alois Walde (November 30, 1869, Innsbruck - October 3, 1924, Koenigsberg ) is an Austrian philologist specializing in the study of Indo-European languages , a teacher, a scientific writer.

Educated at the universities of Leipzig [2] and Innsbruck , where he studied ancient languages ​​and comparative linguistics ; in 1894 he defended a doctoral dissertation there. Since 1895 he was hired by the library of the University of Innsbruck. A year later, he was rehabilitated in the field of linguistics (becoming the first to be successfully rehabilitated in this direction in the history of the university). Since 1904 he was an assistant professor of linguistics, since 1907, an extraordinary professor. In 1909 he moved to work at the University of Giessen , receiving the title of full professor there. In 1912 he returned to Innsbruck, where he became the successor of his teacher Friedrich Stolz; in 1914 he was elected dean of the faculty and in 1916 - rector of the university. In 1917 he was elected a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . Since 1922 he taught at the University of Konigsberg ; in 1924 he accepted the offer to become a professor at the University of Wroclaw , but was unable to begin duties in connection with his death.

Walde made a significant contribution to the formation of the so-called laryngeal theory, and especially to the study of the vocabulary of various Indo-European languages. He was the author of several multivolume etymological dictionaries of the Indo-European languages, subsequently repeatedly reprinted and supplemented: Latin ("Lateinisches etymologisches Wörterbuch"; 1906), Italian (1916), three-volume Indo - Germanic ("Vergleichendes Wörterbuch der indo-germanisc; 1927-1932, was completed by Julius Pokorny ) and others.
