Emigration of a part of Zaporizhzhya Cossacks in the 18th century

The first Ukrainian political immigration to Sweden was a consequence of the events that took place during the Northern War (1700-1721). These were the Cossacks, led by the hetman Philip Orlik , who arrived in Sweden in 1715. Emigration from Austria-Hungary in the 19th-early 20th centuries

The next wave of Ukrainian immigrants arrived in Sweden in the second half of the XIX-early XX centuries. They were mainly immigrants from Galicia , which at that time belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire . Most of them returned to their native lands, but some assimilated into Swedish society. [one]

Emigration after World War II

A new immigrant wave appeared in Sweden at the end of World War II. It is believed that in the first post-war years, about 2.5 thousand people of Ukrainian origin lived here. Later, some of them left for the USA , Canada and other countries [1] .

In 1947, the Ukrainian community of Sweden was established in Stockholm . The first general meeting of the Ukrainian community and the first congress of Ukrainians in Sweden took place on January 6, 1948 in the town of Flyusta near Stockholm . Here it was decided to name the association, its charter was approved. The first chairman of the Ukrainian community was V. Fedorchuk (1948-1951). Later, V. Butko (1952), K. Garbar (1953-1978), B. Zaluga (1979-1992, 1994-1998), P. Basarab-Horvat (1992-1994) were elected chairmen of the community. years., 1998-1999), I. Sushelnitska (1999-2006), L. Koval (since April 2006) [1] .

Both in the initial stages, and at present, the main task of the Ukrainian community is outreach. The publication housed publications of the Swedish and European press on Ukrainian topics, articles on Ukrainian culture and history. In Stockholm, in the 1950s, the Ukrainian Information Center was opened under the leadership of Bogdan Kentřinsky. Thanks to the information centers, the activity of Ukrainians in Sweden has noticeably intensified. Dynamically worked Ukrainian Academic Club , uniting Ukrainian students [1] .

In Sweden, there were also several representative offices and organizations created by Ukrainian emigrant circles, in particular, the representative office of the Liberation Union of Ukraine (headed by O.
