Biography

Nadezhda Masyuk was born on October 1, 1930 in Kiev in a family of teachers Prokhor Dmitrievich and Anna Dmitrievna Masyuk. Her father taught botany at the Kiev Pedagogical Institute.

After graduating from high school in 1949, she entered the biological and soil faculty of Taras Shevchenko Kiev State University , where she specialized in the Department of Botany under the guidance of A.V. Topachsky .

In 1954, having completed her studies at the university, she entered the graduate school of the Institute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR .

In 1959 she defended her thesis “Protococcal algae of water bodies of the West Ukrainian Polesie”.

From that time until 1972 she worked at the Institute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR , having gone from a junior research associate to the head of the department of algology (1966-1972).

In 1972, she headed the Department of Lower Plants of T. G.Shevchenko Kiev State University and remained in this position until 1985, when the departments of lower and higher plants were combined.

In 1973 she defended her doctoral dissertation “Genus Dunaliella Teod. , morphology, systematics, ecology, geographical distribution and prospects for practical use. " In 1974, she was awarded the academic title of professor .

From 1985 to 1991, she worked as a professor at the Department of Botany of KSU named after T. G Shevchenko.

In 1986, she returned to the Institute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (later the N.G. Cold Institute of Botany of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine), where she worked as a leading researcher in the spore plant department, and since 2006, in the lichenology and bryology department.

She died after a long illness on March 13, 2009 in Kiev .

Scientific Papers

The range of scientific interests of Nadezhda Prokhorovna included issues of taxonomy , floristry , ecology , evolution , ontogenesis , physiological and biochemical characteristics of green algae.

She described more than 50 new algae taxa for science (the new class Chlorodendrophyceae Massjuk , the new genera Topaczevskiella Massjuk and Pedinomonadopsis Massjuk & Guk , the new subgenus Pascheria Massjuk, and the sections Tertiolectae Massjuk , Virides Massjuk , and Peirceinae Massjuk of the Dunaliella genus Dunaliella Telenov. , Hydrianum , Myochloris , Phyllariochloris , Polytoma , Pyrobotrys , Scenedesmus , etc.), discovered more than 100 taxa new to the algal flora of Ukraine and other countries of Eurasia.

Nadezhda Masyuk proposed new approaches to solving the species , the origin of the eukaryotic cell, the morphology and cytology of eukaryotic algae, the place and role of algae in the evolution of life, the study of photoreceptor systems and the photomotion of monadic algae, botanical terminology and nomenclature.

NN Masyuk first proposed evolutionary concepts of the morphological type of algae, described a new type of cell division found in green flagellated algae, developed schemes for their phylogenetic relationships, worked on the issue of determining the location of algae in the system of living organisms. She and her colleagues developed a method for the mass cultivation of carotene-bearing algae, which, in turn, was taken in many countries as the basis for industrial technologies for the production of carotene (“ß” -carotene from Dunaliella algae).

In addition, she led the student group, which operated at the Department of Lower Plants of T. G.Shevchenko Kiev State University.

During his work at the Institute of Botany during 1986-2009, under the leadership of N. N. Masyuk, one doctoral and five master's theses were defended (mainly research on soil algae). Thus, Nadezhda Prokhorovna is considered the founder of the Kiev school of soil algologists [1] .

Scientific Papers

NN Masyuk is the author and co-author of 271 publications, including 12 monographs, articles 162 and 70 abstracts. In addition, she wrote 5 brochures, 16 methodical works. He has three copyright certificates. She is also the author of several teaching aids.

Honors & Honors

For her merits in the study of algae and the education of new generations of researchers, as well as obtaining scientific results, Nadezhda Prokhorovna was awarded several awards and distinctions:

  • Prize of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine named after N. G Kholodny ( 1995 )
  • Medal “In memory of the 1500th anniversary of Kiev”
  • Veteran of Labor Medal
  • Medal of VDNH of the USSR "For success in the development of the national economy of the USSR."

Memory

In honor of Nadezhda Prokhorovna, two types of algae new to science were named:

  • Hyalogonium massjukiae Kostikov,
  • “Interfilum massjukiae” Mykhailjuk et al.
