Creativity
One of the first Polish comedians. Very popular during his life, the author of a number of satirical and humorous stories.
In 1840, he published his first story, the plot of which was the comic adventure of A. Vilkonsky himself during his studies at a German gymnasium; This story immediately made the author’s name popular.
This was followed by other stories of the same success, which were published in the Warsaw Library (Bibljoteka Warszawska). These stories were usually read several times, always causing loud laughter.
The reason for the tremendous popularity of A. Vilkonsky is that he fell into the tone of the most powerful at that time nobility-democratic and at the same time conservative party, which hated the lords and half-lords, who mocked the middle class and looked sentimental at the man faithful to his master and satisfied with his position.
The works of A. Vilkonsky are therefore not so much literary as journalistic; they are important for characterizing the then leading party in Polish society.
The comedism of A. Vilkonsky is based mainly on situations that are sometimes tense and trivial for him; the characters of the heroes of his works are almost always caricatured and respond with a cartoon .
Despite such popularity, the writer could not secure financial independence for himself. The journal “Dzwón Literacki” founded by him because of problems with censorship was not successful, and he became a member of the editorial board of the newspaper “Dziennik Warszawski”, which aroused terrible things in the then Polish society indignation against oneself. As a result, A. Vilkonski was forced to move from Warsaw to the village and died there in 1852.
