Nikolai Mikhailovich Belyaev (September 11, 1899, St. Petersburg - December 23, 1930, Prague ) - Byzantine historian, art critic, archaeologist. One of the founders of the N.P. Kondakov Seminar and his learned secretary until his death. Pupil and editor of posthumously published works of the Russian historian N.P. Kondakov .

Biography
Nikolai Belyaev was born in St. Petersburg in the large noble family of the Belyaevs , known for its military traditions. His father Mikhail Nikolaevich [1] (1868-1920) was an artillery general, cousin of his father M. A. Belyaev (1864-1918) was the last Minister of War of the Russian Empire . Nikolai Belyaev received his primary education in schools in Gatchina and St. Petersburg, early showing a penchant for the humanities. In 1916 he entered the Faculty of History and Philology of St. Petersburg University , where he participated in the seminar of N. I. Kareev . After the February Revolution of 1917, he entered the 2nd Special Artillery Brigade as a volunteer, and in July he was accepted as a junker at the Konstantinovsky Artillery School . After the October Revolution, Belyaev joined the White Movement in southern Russia, first with General Alekseev in the Volunteer Army . Private Belyaev fought near Rostov-on-Don , along with partisans of Esaul Chernetsov was captured, but was able to escape. He participated in the Ice Campaign of General Kornilov , was wounded and was captured a second time. Then he continued to fight in Ukraine and the Crimea . He was awarded the St. George Cross 4th degree and the badge of "Chernetsov". In November 1920, Belyaev evacuated from Crimea to Constantinople , where his sister already lived. Interrupting casual earnings, he stayed there until the spring of next year, after which, with the support of the American Red Cross, he moved to Prague . There he was able to resume his studies at the Faculty of Philosophy of Charles University , choosing the history of Byzantine art as his specialty [2] .
Although among the teachers of Belyaev there were such recognized scholars as L. Niederle in Russian and Slavic archeology, B. Grozny in the history of the East, he considered N.P. Kondakova to be his true mentor and supervisor. After his death, N.P. Kondakova in 1925, Nikolai Belyaev became one of the founders of the Seminarium Kondakovianum . In the first issue of the print edition of the seminar, Belyaev’s first major study, “Decoration of Late Antique and Early Byzantine Clothing,” was published. He graduated from the University in 1927 with a Doctor of Philosophy degree, after which he devoted himself completely to scientific activities in the framework of the Seminar. There, he acted as academic secretary and taught classes with students. With the participation of Belyaev, a series of studies on the iconography Zografika was published. He also edited the works of N.P. Kondakov, published after his death. On behalf of the Seminar, N. Belyaev made a number of overseas trips, including to the monasteries of Athos , the results of which were made reports [3] .
In 1926, Belyaev married another Kondakov student, Lyubov Pavlovna Kondratskaya. N. Belyaev died on December 23, 1930 in Prague in an accident [4] .
