Story
Jerry Warriner returns home from a trip to Florida and notices that his wife Lucy is not at home. When she comes in the company of a music teacher, Armand Duvalla, Jerry finds out that Lucy spent the night with Armand, after his car, they claim, suddenly broke down. Several fake letters, in turn, convince Lucy that her husband was not really in Florida. All these suspicions lead to divorce.
During the divorce proceedings, Lucy moves to her aunt Patsy’s apartment and soon becomes engaged to her neighbor, Dan, while Jerry goes on a date with singer Dixie Belle Lee. In the end, Lucy realizes that she still loves Jerry and decides to break off the engagement. However, before she reports this to Dan, Armand comes to her apartment to discuss her divorce from Jerry. When Jerry appears, Armand decides that it will be advisable to hide in the bedroom. Jerry wants to make peace and make Lucy happy, but at this moment Dan and his mother arrive. Wanting to avoid complications, Jerry slips into Lucy's bedroom and finds Armand already there. When Jerry drives Armand out of the apartment, Dan and his mother leave.
After that, Jerry walks through the city with Barbara Vance. To break this bond, on the night before the final decision on divorce, Lucy comes to the party at the Vance mansion, pretending to be Jerry's sister. She behaves like a dancer and convinces everyone that Jerry's father (“their” father) was a gardener at Princeton University, and not a student-athlete, as Jerry argued. Realizing that his chances with Barbara were effectively sabotaged, Jerry takes Lucy away by car.
The police stop them on the road and bring the couple home to Aunt Lucy. Once there, Jerry admits that he behaved like a fool, and Warriners happily put up, just at midnight.
