Biography

He was one of nine children in the family of a merchant shopkeeper and Vilnius burgomaster Martin Slendzinsky and his wife, Katerina from Voitekhovichi. He spent his childhood in his father’s house in Vilna, which was located at ul. Bolshaya, 203 (now DJoya Street , 15).

In 1819-1831 he studied painting, drawing, carving, architecture and history at Vilnius University. He was engaged in carving with Professor Casimir Yelsky , a student of the famous Polish sculptor Andre Lebrun . The teacher of the drawing was Jan Rustem . Josef Kraszewski taught history, with whom Alexander was friends later.

It is known that in 1842 Alexander Slendzinsky lived and carried out orders at the estate Krasny Dvor in the Kovensky district . The estate belonged to Benedict Tyszkiewicz , who was a philanthropist and patron of artists. In the Red Court, Alexander met with the Vilnius landscape painter and stage designer Albert Jamet . Since 1848, Alexander served as a home teacher of drawing Tyszkiewicz. For the church of St. Theresa built in Raudondvaris, he painted the cross and some altars.

During the years of his life in Vilnius (1840–1848) he was friends with Stanislav Monyushko and gave drawing lessons to his daughter Elizabeth. Monyushko, in turn, also gave piano lessons to the son of Alexander Vincent . The poet Vladislav Syrokomlya was entering the house by the Slendzinsky, musical and poetry evenings were held in their salon.

Since the late 1840s, together with his wife Karolina from Kargovdov (1812 - 09/23/1883) he lived in the villages of Bortsyany (Aleksandrovsky volost) and Boyaryshki ( Ionavskaya volost ) near Kovno. The family had six children - three daughters and three sons:

  • Stanislav (communications engineer)
  • Victoria Felicia (born 30.08.1835 in Jonava )
  • Vincent Leopold (born 02.01.1837 in Scriabino , artist)
  • Catherine Isabella (born 05.11.1841 in Bortsyani)
  • Johann Ludgard (born 04/04/1844 in Bortsyany)
  • Alexander Iona (born 1842, botanist, employee of the Jagiellonian University )

Alexander died in 1878 in Vilna, and was buried in the Bernardine cemetery in a family crypt, which he founded in 1833 for his parents.

Creativity

His painting of a religious character has been preserved (Madonna and Child in the church of St. Theresa in Vilnius , St. Cecilia in the Dominican Cathedral in Vilnius ). The portraiture, in which Alexander specialized, was stylistically close to the style of Jan Rustem , characterized by great visual similarity with the portrait. He also painted scenes of the historical genre, drawing on the January uprising . Works of the domestic genre were often with allegorical content, similar to the manner of D. Teniers. In scenes from the life of the poor and the poor, he practiced a naturalistic form, exaggerating ugly signs.
