Biography
Born in Landsberg, in a noble family. At an early age she went to the Hohenburg Monastery on Mount Odile in the Vosges , not far from Strasbourg , in 1167 she became his abbess and remained her until her death.
Creativity
The author of the illustrated encyclopedia "Garden of comfort" ( Hortus deliciarum , 1175), written in Latin - a compendium of various knowledge, which contains over 300 allegorical miniatures made by the abbess herself [4] .
Legacy
The book of Gerrada was widely corresponded and read in the Middle Ages. The manuscript was stored in the monastery until the 16th century, then it ended up in the Strasbourg Library, where in 1870 it burned down during the Franco-Prussian War [4] .
Miniatures were copied in 1818 by Christian Moritz Engelhardt, a book was published in 1879 - 1899 [4] .
