The 1973 International Festival of Fantastic Films in Avoriaz (Film Festival) (Le Festival international du film fantastique d'Avoriaz) was held in the French Alps (France) from January 16-23, 1973. It was the first festival in this resort town.
Its main result was the phenomenal success of the 25-year-old Steven Spileberg television drama “ Duel ”, in fact the first full-length work of an outstanding director. It should be noted that among Spielberg’s competitors there were eminent masters of cinema and genres of horror and film fiction (Marco Ferreri, Mario Bava, Marcello Aliprandi. Yes, and among the paintings presented at this very first show there were tapes that later entered the list of classics of the horror and film science fiction genre : “ Terrible Dr. Fibes ”, “ Bloody Bay ”, “ Dunwich Horror .” But the courage and innovation of the young director Spielberg came to taste the eminent jury led by René Clement and with the participation of such masters as Christopher Lee and Alain Rob-Grieux , Juan Bunuel .
