Biography

Born and lived in New York.

At the beginning of his career, he wanted to become famous as a singer. And then he barely made ends meet [4] .

Everything changed in 1962 when at a party he met Ellie Greenwich , his future wife and future co-author of songwriting. They began to write songs together and once went to audition in the famous “songwriting factory” by Don Kirscher - the Britt Building in New York [4] .

There, Ellie Greenwich singing from the next room was heard by Lieber and Stoller [5] . They invited Barry and Greenwich to work on Phil Spector 's label Philles Records , where Barry and Greenwich wrote and arranged songs for a number of music groups. Among the hits that they wrote for Spector at the time are “ Da Do Ron Ron ” and “ Be My Baby ” [4] .

Then Liber and Stoller founded their label Redbird Records , and Barry and Greenwich began to work there permanently [4] .

All the 1960s passed for them in writing hits. Among their most famous songs are “ Chapel of Love ” ( Dixie Cups , 1964), “ Leader of the Pack ” ( Shangri-Las , 1964), “ River Deep, Mountain High ” ( Ike and Tina Turners , 1966) and “ I Can Hear Music ”( Beach Boys , 1969) [4] [6] .

When their marriage broke up, they stopped working together. Greenwich began working as a session vocalist, and Barry got a permanent job as a producer on A&M Records . There in the 1970s, he worked with such famous performers as Neil Diamond, The Monkees, Van Morrison, but his success as a producer with his former success as a songwriter was no longer compared [4] .
