Biography

Maria Derem was born into a wealthy bourgeois family. Her father was in trade. He gave his daughters, Maria and Anna, an education, and after his death left an inheritance that provided them with financial independence and the opportunity to engage in social activities [1] .

Maria Derem shared feminist views and actively defended women's rights. She was engaged in literary activities and journalism, made presentations, held conferences and evenings, which brought together progressively thinking public figures, writers, philosophers, masons [1] .

In 1869, together with Leon Rischer, journalist, editor-in-chief of the newspaper Petit Parisien and a Freemason of the Great East of France , with the support of several friends, she began to publish the Women's Law weekly. In April 1870, they also founded the Association for the Rights of Women, demanding gender equality before the law and morality [1] .
