Biography
Born in Orebro on July 7, 1932 in the family of the pharmacist Rudolf Dahlgren and his wife, nee Greta Dalstrand [1] .
He received a master 's degree in biology (1955) and a doctorate in botany (1963) at Lund University [2] . As an assistant professor at the Lund Botanical Museum, he participated in botanical expeditions in South Africa in 1956-1957 and 1965-1966.
In 1973 he became a professor of botany at the University of Copenhagen . Here he developed his system of classification of angiosperms , based on a much larger number of classification features than previous systems, including phytochemical characteristics (see also chemotaxonomy ). Although the system was first introduced in Danish [3] , it quickly gained widespread acceptance, especially thanks to visual diagrams, the so-called dalgrenograms. [4] [5]
In 1986, he was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences .
He died in a car accident in Skane ( Sweden ) on February 14, 1987 [6] .
Dahlgren had three children: Suzanne, Helena and Fredrik [7] .

In honor of R. Dahlgren, the South African monotypic genus Dahlgrenodendron JJMvan der Merwe & AEvan Wyk (1988) [8]
The Rolf Dahlgren Memorial Symposium was held in 1987 in Berlin , Germany .
