Biography
Liam McGeary was born on October 4, 1982 in the city of Kings Lynn , Norfolk County. He practiced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu , was a member of the Gracie Barra association and the team of the famous Brazilian wrestler Renza Gracie , and received a brown belt in the BJ from his mentor John Denacher. He performed at the London Championship and at the World Championship in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
He began to engage in mixed martial arts in 2009, the first time he performed at the amateur level, having gained one victory and suffered one defeat. He made his debut among professionals in May 2010, forcing his rival to surrender using the “elbow lever”. In his second match, he won the British ICO champion title, after which he went to fight in the USA, where he had a successful fight at the Ring of Combat promotion tournament [2] .
Having three victories in his track record and not a single defeat, in 2013 McGeary attracted the attention of the large American organization Bellator MMA and made his debut here with a technical knockout. Then he won two more fights, and in 2014 he became one of the participants in the Summer Series eight tournament - at the stages of quarter-finals and semi-finals he knocked out Mike Muchitelli and Egidijus Valavicius , while in the decisive final match he defeated Kelly Anundson , using the “back triangle” ". Having won the elimination tournament, he was awarded the right to challenge the Bellator champion title, which at that time belonged to the American Emanuel Newton - in total, McGeary tried to force Newton to surrender in various wrestling tricks 11 times, but their confrontation eventually lasted all five rounds, and he won unanimously judging decision, becoming the new champion of the organization [3] [4] [5] .
In September 2015, Liam McGeary successfully defended his championship belt, stopping the famous “veteran” Tito Ortiz with the “triangle”. For more than a year he didn’t go into the cage due to a knee injury, in November 2016 he returned to MMA and met with a new challenger, UFC veteran Phil Davis , who lost five points in points, thereby losing his league title. In February 2017, former rugby player Brett McDermott defeated him by technical knockout in the second round [6] [7] .
In February 2018, by technical knockout in the third round, he lost to Russian Vadim Nemkov .
