Biography

Born on August 4, 1965 in Novosibirsk . In 1990 he graduated from the Novosibirsk Architectural Institute. Since the late 1980s, he has been engaged in painting and graphics in the style of neo - expressionism . The period of the so-called. primitive performances: “World of Arts”, “Election for squirrels” (putting up portraits of B. Yeltsin in a pine forest), “Coastal Egg” (together with V. Mizin ). Often visits creative squats in St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg and other cities.

Acquaintance with representatives of the underground art of Zurich in 1994 made it possible to take part in the Eurocot project of the European subculture (Zurich, 1995). After that, Novosibirsk artists with foreign participants of Eurocot organized several art projects in the Urals: the international festival Ecological Art Bridge Eurokon-96 (June 1996, Novosibirsk), the art parade of ordinary things Post-VDNH, where objects were created and installations from consumer goods (1997, Museum of Fine Arts, Yekaterinburg).

Thanks to connections with the European underground, Bulnygin's works are exhibited in independent galleries (Tacheles, Berlin, 1997, Message salon, Zurich, 1998).

In parallel, the artist organizes cultural events in his native city, holds the festival "Cultural Heroes of the 21st Century" (November 1999, Novosibirsk).

Since 1998, after a fire in the workshop, he is fond of creating light objects and installations, and starts working with video. The video film “Zhilmassiv” (1998) turned out to be programmatic for a new stage of creativity. The main genres are a short film, video installation, flash animation.

Since the late 90's, he has been taking part in projects by a group of artists, some of which later became known as the Blue Noses group, with which he collaborated until 2004. Further, the artist is increasingly working in the field of video and computer animation.

Individual creativity developed from video performances in which the author himself presented himself as a character (Lola, 2000), through experiments with editing, sound, and so on. "Small cut" (2001-2003), towards the direction of the directorial "short" movie (since 2004).

In 2000, Bulnygin organized the first international festival of ultra-short film (Extra Short Films, held annually until 2014). Since 2001, she has been performing with video performances under the name aka vj db, including with the group Nuclear Los.

In 2004 he moved to Moscow, where he became an active participant in the artistic life of the capital. Participates in special projects of the III and IV Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art (2007 and 2009), 54 Venice Biennale (2011), in international exhibitions (Tirana, Valencia, Istanbul, Berlin, New York, Paris, Helsinki) and media festivals ( Hamburg, Oberhausen, The Hague), as well as in the I Ural Industrial Biennale (2010).

In addition to filming short films, Bulnygin programs interactive video games ("Mistress", 2008, "Time killer", 2009), shoots looped videos ("Soyuz-11", 2011; "Skyscrapers-Zombies", 2012; Lamp ", 2014), creates large-scale projections on buildings (“Attempt” and “Storm”, Perm, 2010–2011, “Exorcism as a show”, Kirov, 2011, “Finita dolce vita”, Manege / Moscow, 2011), in recent years, on the basis of video mapping technology, creates installations or, as the artist himself calls them, video sculptures (Termitniki, 2016, Remember All, 2015; Aquarium, 2015; For Vertical, 2014)

He currently implements several street art projects (“Signature”, Samara, 2014, “A surface look”, Krasnoyarsk, 2011, “Improvement in the area”, since 2011), as well as a stencil-project with the image of hemp bush (“Bushes” , since 2010).

In 2010, he reached the final of the Kandinsky Prize -2010 in the nomination Media Art with the work “Spring”. Twice medalist (first place) of the Media Forum in the framework of the Moscow Film Festival (2003 and 2007).

The digital works of Dmitry Bulnygin are in the collections of the Multimedia Art Museum , Moscow, the Museum ART4.RU , the Vienna Museum of Applied Art, the Museum of Modern Art in Helsinki, etc.
