History
In 2013, in Rostov-on-Don, on the initiative of the Ministry of Sports of the Rostov Region, a competition was organized to create a sculpture of the famous football player Viktor Ponedelnik. In August of the same year, the Rostov sculptor Dmitry Lyndin was offered to take part in the competition. In September, the sculptor presented a sample of his work, made of clay. 3 other participants competed with him. A commission was organized, which included: Sergey Gorban , vice-governor of the region, Victor Ponedelnik , football player, and Yury Balanhin, sports minister of the Rostov region. According to the results of the competition, the winner was Dmitry Lyndin. The only edit that the sculptor had to do in his work was the height of the football leggings - it had to be increased.
Creating a bronze sculpture took 2 months, from September to November 2013. The cost of materials was estimated at 750 thousand rubles, the sculptor himself and the foundry workers did not require money for the work [1] . The height of the sculpture is 2 meters [3] . Initially, the date of installation of the monument was announced in spring 2014. But due to financial nuances - reimbursement of expenses for materials - the date was postponed indefinitely. In July 2014, it became known that the amount of 96.5 thousand rubles was collected and allocated to a monument to football veterans and the Don Football Federation.
The Minister of Don Sport said that the installation and opening of the monument was decided to coincide with the day when the first match of FC Rostov in the UEFA Europa League will take place. They decided to locate the monument near the Olimp-2 stadium [1] . The opening of the monument to footballer Victor Monday, which is also often called the sculpture “Footballer”, took place on August 28, 2015 [4] . The solemn ceremony was attended by Deputy Governor of the Rostov Region Igor Guskov [2] .
