Agapitov, Nikolai Nikolaevich

Nikolai Nikolaevich Agapitov (1840–1900, Irkutsk) - archaeologist , ethnographer , naturalist , ruler of affairs of the VSORGO, mentor, later - director of the Irkutsk teacher’s seminary. Member of the Eastern Department of the Russian Geographical Society. Teacher of pedagogy, and then director of the Irkutsk teacher’s seminary. In 1887 - a college adviser .

Biography

He made several expeditions to different regions of the Irkutsk province, collected for the museum numerous collections of objects of ethnography and archeology, prepared herbariums of plants and botanical collections. He studied the shamanism of the northern Buryats. He published articles in the News of VSORGO. He studied the question of the origin and distribution of black soil in Siberia and examined many prehistoric monuments. In 1881 he studied rock paintings on the Sagan-Zaba cliff on Lake Baikal (located five kilometers northeast of Cape Krestovsky).

He was awarded the small gold medal of the Russian Geographical Society (together with M.I. Khangalov), two silver medals. In 1879–1885 he was editor of Izvestia VSORGO.

In 1888 he was transferred from Irkutsk to the post of director of the Wroclaw Real School.
