Publish
For the first time information about the upcoming edition of the comic "Universal History" appeared in the 46th issue of "Satyricon" for 1909:
“All annual subscribers will receive in the form of a free application a luxuriously illustrated edition of“ UNIVERSAL HISTORY ”, processed by“ Satyricon ”from the angle of his view, ed. A. T. Averchenko. (Although our “Universal History” will not be recommended by the Scientific Committee, consisting of the Ministry of Education, as a guide for educational institutions, but this book will give subscribers the only opportunity to look at the historical past of nations in a completely new and completely original lighting). “UNIVERSAL HISTORY” will be a large volume, artistically printed on good paper, with a mass of illustrations by the best Russian cartoonists ”.
The book was published as an application, after which it was reprinted several times separately, as it was very popular.
Problems with the 4th part
The “Russian History” part ends with the Patriotic War of 1812 , but this did not save it from problems with censorship.
The 1910 edition has 154 pages, since it came out without it [2] , in 1911 a volume of 240 pages was published, which included the missing part [1] . The edition of 1912 was again without a section prohibited by censorship [3] .
Later, the 4th part still received a continuation [4] - O.L. D'Or. “Nicholas II Favorable. The end of the “Russian history”, published in 1912 by the “Satyricon" ” (Petersburg, Typ .:“ Literacy ”, 1917. 31 page) [5] .
In 1922, the 4th part with the addition was published by the author in a separate book under the title: O.L. D'Or. "Russian history with Varyags and thieves" [6] . The supplement is a chapter dedicated to Alexander I , Nicholas I and Nicholas II , and the last section, published after the revolution, differs from the general, rather subtle black humor of the book in the nature of its brutal and cruel and bloody humor.
Feature
For the satirical portrayal of the political situation in Russia and social mores, the authors used the technique of ironic depiction of the historical past of Russia, projecting features characteristic of the events of their time into the ancient era, and giving prominent representatives of history features of contemporaries [4] .
