Club career

Born July 26, 1960 in the city of Craiova . Pupil of the football school of the club " University " (Craiova). On March 14, 1981, he made his debut for the first team in Division A. From the 1983/84 season, Popescu became the main player and played for his native club until 1992, having won two Romanian championships and three Romanian Cups during this period.

In 1992, Popescu went abroad to the Swiss club Locarno from the second division. Despite the club’s ambitions, for three seasons the team was not able to enter the National League A.

In 1995, Popescu returned to the Romanian “University”, but could not become a major player and during the winter break of 1995/96 he moved to another club from his hometown of “ Electroputera ”, who played in the second division, and at the beginning of the 1996/97 season third Krai club "Constructorul".

In 1998, he signed a contract with Polytechnic ( Iasi ) with Division B, where he left after the first round of the 1998/99 season. He finished his career at the Birkirkara Maltese club, for which he played until 2001.

National team performances

May 21, 1990 made his debut in official matches with the national team of Romania in a friendly game against the Egyptian team . In the same year, he was a member of the 1990 World Cup in Italy as part of the national team, but did not enter the field. In total, during the career in the national team, which lasted 3 years, he spent 7 matches in the form of the country's main team and scored 1 goal.
