Biography
Born on August 29, 1937 in Leningrad.
In 1959 - graduated with honors from the Leningrad Mining Institute and was sent to work in the North-West Geological Department.
In 1960, he was transferred to VNIGRI , where he went from a geologist to a director (since 1986).
In 1969, he graduated from the correspondence department of the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics of Leningrad State University .
In 2003 he was elected Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
He died on September 12, 2006.
Scientific and social activities
Pioneer of the introduction of mathematical methods and computers in petroleum geology.
At the initial stage of scientific activity, he worked on the problems of estimating hydrocarbon resources of great depths and developing mathematical methods and human-machine technologies for solving a wide class of geological problems.
Later he worked on improving the theoretical foundations, methodology and system of methods for quantitative forecasting of oil and gas potential.
A long stage of his scientific activity was devoted to the development of geological and economic forecasting of oil and gas potential and long-term planning of oil and gas operations, taking into account the system of market relations taking shape in the country.
Under his leadership and direct participation, research was carried out aimed at solving the problem of developing deposits of heavy metal-containing oils and natural bitumen.
The author of more than 300 works, including 30 monographs.
He was a chairman and member of the Organizing Committees of a number of International Conferences and Symposia, an honorary doctor of the West Pacific University (USA), a full member of a number of public and foreign academies.
He developed and delivered lecture courses at the St. Petersburg Mining Institute : "Systems Analysis in Geology" and "Mathematical Modeling of Geological Processes."
