History
It is first mentioned in 1258 under the name of Vatashomleva (Wathasomlyowa), which translates as Mount Vata . The word “vata” is supposedly of Turkic origin, and “somlyowa” is an old Hungarian word with the meaning “mountain, mountainous terrain”.
The city belonged to the noble family Bathory , whose family castle was here. The castle was built by Miklos Bathory , the Transylvanian governor at the beginning of the 13th century and was first mentioned under 1319 . After Bathory built a mansion in the city in 1592, the castle fell into disrepair and now lies in ruins.
