The Chery River flows in a deep canyon with steep walls, which it “drilled” in soft volcanic rocks.
The river is formed from the confluence of two streams: the right one (in fact, Cheri) flows out from under the Gergeti glacier; the left stream (Blot) originates from the Abano glacier.
During the Kazbek eruption, several lava flows left their mark in the Cheri gorge. Outcrops of andesites and taxite (striped) lavas are found on the slopes of the left bank of the river. [2] [3] . The right side of the river valley also has a lava flow trace in the form of the Quenet-mta spur, whose slope formed in the form of wide green terraces. [3] . On the terraces mentioned is the village of Gergeti (absolute height 1800 m); name option: Gergeti, as well as the name of the glacier.
When flowing into the Terek River, the valley of the Cheri River is about 400-500 m wide. In the floodplain of the river you can find many boulders that fell into the floodplain during the 1953 flood. [3]
