Biography
In the early years, Shi Yongfen was a student of the Beijing Theater Troupe ( Chinese 北平 沙龍 劇團 ), and once participated in the production of Cao Yu's " Sunrise " . [2] From 1937, she studied at the University of Tokyo in the music department, until 1942. After theater school, she wanted to become a movie star, saying that she wanted to be like beams of light coming from a movie projector onto a large screen. Hence, her stage name was the name Bai Guang ( Chinese. 白光 ), which translates as "white light" [2] .
Her mandopop songs have often been used as soundtracks in many films where she starred. At that time, there were many singers with higher voices, and her low and hoarse voice, in many ways, helped her become a big star in Shanghai [2] . People called her the “Queen of the low voice” ( Chinese 低音 歌 后 ).
Bai's career on the big screen began in 1943 [3] . She was known for seductive roles because of her flirty appearance on the screen, and also played the villain at that time. Among her famous hits include Autumn Night (秋夜), If I Weren't for You (如果 沒有 你), Hypocrite (假正經), Soul Shrouded in Memory (魂 縈 舊夢) and “Waiting for your return” (等著 你 回來).
After the war, Bai moved to Hong Kong and joined Great Wall Pictures . In 1949, the film "Forgotten Woman" ( Chinese. 蕩婦 心 ) was shown in Hong Kong. Even Governor Alexander Grantham went to the premiere.
By 1950, Bai, tired of low-quality films, she ended her career as an actress in China. After she married an American in 1951, she lived in Japan, where since 1953 she led a nightclub in Tokyo's Ginza quarter. This marriage was not the last, and she returned to Hong Kong, where she continued to record songs until 1959, when she officially ended her career. In 1969, Bai moved to Kuala Lumpur , [2] where she married again. Later, in 1979, she performed in Taiwan. Her last public appearance was the awards ceremony for singers in Hong Kong in 1995 [2] .
Bai died in Kuala Lumpur on August 27, 1999. [2]
