History
The Wheeling Nealers began playing in 1981 at the Atlantic Coast Hockey League ( ACHL ) as the Carolina Thunderbirds , based in Winston-Salem , North Carolina .
The team immediately established itself as one of the leaders, having won four regular seasons in a row and three times becoming the owners of the “Bob Payne Trophy” as the winners of the championship. In 1987, ACHL ceased to exist and the team joined the AAHL League Championship , 1987–88 season. Subsequently , Carolina Thunderbirds , Virginia Lancers , and Johnston Chiefs became the first East Coast Hockey League clubs in 1988. The Thunderbirds managed to reach the finals, but lost to his Toledo Storm team from Ohio. In 1990, the team was renamed Winston-Salel Thunderbirds and moved to Wheeling . In 1992, the team was renamed again, this time into the Wheeling Neilers, under the leadership of President and Co-owner Ed Broihil .
After a dispute with the Seattle Thunderbirds over the use of the brand, the club was renamed the Nealers. The name was chosen in connection with the rich history of the city in the field of nail production.
The team spends home games at the VesBanko arena.
