Background and Ideology
For 17 years in Guinea-Bissau, the one-party system of the Marxist-Leninist party PAIGK remained. In 1989, political reforms were proclaimed, including a multi-party system. The creation of alternative political parties has begun. One of them was the Democratic Social Front - Frente Democrática Social ( FDS ) [1] . The initiator of the creation of the FDS was Rafael Barbosa - a veteran of the anti-colonial struggle, one of the founders and the first chairman of PAIGK [2] .
Rafael Barbosa adhered to the positions of left-wing nationalism and democratic socialism . In the 1960s, he sharply diverged with PAIGC leader Amilcar Cabral , as he opposed the armed struggle , for a compromise with Portugal and non-violent methods of achieving independence. Cabral supporters accused Barbosa of neocolonialist politics and blamed him on the assassination of the PAIGC leader in 1973 . In independent Guinea-Bissau under a one-party PAIGC regime, Barbosa was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Freed from the reforms, Rafael Barbosa established the FDS. His ally in this was the future president of Guinea-Bissau, Kumba Yala [3] . The left rhetoric of the FDS is oriented towards the peasantry and the poor layers of citizens [4] .
Policy
In the 1994 election , the FDS was a member of the opposition coalition Union for Change . The coalition took third place with 12.6% of the vote and 6 seats in parliament, but the FDS did not achieve parliamentary representation.
In 1999, the FDS stood for election on its own and received 1 parliamentary mandate.
In the 2004 election , the FDS participated in the United Platform coalition, which received 4.5% of the vote, but did not go to parliament.
The party did not vote in the 2008 elections.
After the death of Rafael Barbosa , the FDS is headed by his daughter Elena Paula Barbosa in 2007 . Under her leadership, the FDS supported the 2012 coup . Elena Barbosa was appointed Secretary of State for Youth, Culture and Sports in the Transitional Government of Fernando Waza [5] .
In the 2014 elections, the FDS received only 1,710 votes (0.29%) and did not go to parliament.
