Life and work
Joan Bruhl studied painting at the La Llota school in Barcelona under the direction of the artist Simo Gomez , and then two years at the Paris Academy of Colarossi , with Rafael Collin . He later worked as a journalist and art critic in the Catalan magazine Joventut. Member of various art groups and movements in Spain, including Els Quatre Gats and Real Círculo Artístico de Barcelona . Participant in the 1896 World's Fair in Barcelona, where he was awarded a gold medal for his canvas Ensomni (Thoughtful).
Brul's early works were created in the tradition of realistic painting. Later, he works more as a symbolist, creates numerous romantic female and girlish images and portraits. He also paints landscapes, which corresponds to the Catalan landscape of the Olot school . He was friendly with the artists Santiago Rusignol and Ramon Casas.
