In 1928 he created the Prague Wind Quintet, headed it until 1955 and played the oboe in its composition. In the early 1930s, he played the same instrument in the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra .
In the 1930s and 1940s, he was also the conductor of the Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra , the choir Verb Prague. In 1942 he headed the Prague Symphony Orchestra , which was led by the next 30 years. He often toured and made more than 300 records [7] .
He also conducted active pedagogical activities at the Conservatory and the Prague Academy of Arts (he taught not only conducting but also playing the oboe). Together with A. Kubat, he created the leadership of the game on this instrument.
G.M. Rozhdestvensky , who was a young student in Prague and attended concerts and rehearsals of a Czech colleague, highly appreciated Smetachek as a conductor.
Vaclav Smetachek was one of the best performers of Forster ’s play “Cyrano”, there is a famous record. He also played Martin a lot, and he instructed, made an orchestral version of “ Pictures from the Exhibition ” by Mussorgsky, despite the presence of about ten other versions. I must say that he was able to find his way, his inner hearing of this composition, and did it brilliantly (G. Rozhdestvensky) [8]
