Genesis and history
The family of Princes Repnins comes from the princes of Chernigov . The ancestor - Prince Ivan Mikhailovich Obolensky , nicknamed Repnya (XVIII knee from Rurik ) - died in 1523 . His descendants were called Repnyn-Obolensky or simply Repnin [4] .
The last male representative of the clan , Field Marshal Prince Nikolai Vasilyevich died in 1801. Although many were convinced that his illegitimate son was Prince Adam Yuri Chartorysky , the genus of the Repnins was declared extinct. In the same year, Alexander I ordered the surname to be transferred to the son of Repnin's daughter, Prince Volkonsky :
“In commemoration of our excellent respect for the military and civil exploits of the late Field Marshal Prince Repnin, in memory of his virtues and love for the fatherland, which in the world and in war, and in service, and in solitude, until the very end of his life, he was full of, and in testimony that true merits never die, but, living in universal gratitude, pass from generation to generation, according to his desire, his immediate relatives and we ourselves know, we deign that his native grandson, from his daughter born, Colonel Prince Nikolai V lkonsky took his name and now was called hereditary Prince Repnin. Yes, the kind of Princes Repnins, who served the country so gloriously, will not fade away with the death of the latter, but, being renewed, will be with the name and example of it in the unforgettable memory of the Russian nobility ” [5] [6] .
Heraldry
The angel depicted in the first part of the coat of arms indicates the origin of the Princes Repnins from the princes of Kiev. The eagle placed in the second part indicates the origin of the Princes Repnins from the princes of Chernigov. The origin of the birds placed in the third part is not clear. A similar in character image of two birds on the sides of plants of eastern origin were often found on seals of the XIII-XIV centuries. Such an image was on the seal of Prince Konstantin Ivanovich Obolensky (1386), a direct ancestor in the tenth tribe of Prince Nikolai Vasilievich Repnin . This fact, of course, should be considered only an interesting coincidence. The image of the bird was also on the seal of Prince Konstantin Yuryevich Obolensky at the end of the 13th – 14th centuries [7] .
