Biography

Early years

Born on August 4, 1972 in Paris, in a family of Moroccan Jews . The daughter of , adviser to the kings of Morocco, Hassan II and Mohammed VI (as a child, Audrey spent school holidays in the royal palace of Morocco). She received a Master of Science from the University of Paris-Dauphin and a Master of Business Administration from Lancaster University . She graduated from the Institute for Political Studies in Paris and the National School of Administration [3] .

Political career

After graduating from the National School of Administration in 2000, she worked in the Accounts Chamber of the Ile-de-France region and was a member of the Committee for Control over the Cost and Efficiency of Public Services. In 2006 she moved to the , where over time she became the head of the audiovisual media division. In 2014, she became an adviser to President Francois Hollande and dealt, in particular, with problems of deregulating the market for audiovisual services and cinema [4] . Among the main tasks of Azulay was also the problem of protecting French cinema in the European market in connection with the advent of Netflix services and other video on demand (VoD) systems [5] .

February 12, 2016 became Minister of Culture of France in the second government of Manuel Waltz [6] .

December 6, 2016 became part of the government of Kaznev , receiving a portfolio of the Minister of Culture and Communications [7] .

On May 17, 2017, the government of Edouard Philippe was formed, in which Francoise Nissen got the position of Azoulay, and she herself did not receive any appointment [8] .

Director-General of UNESCO

May 25, 2017 arrived at the G7 summit in Taormina in Sicily as part of the election campaign for the post of Director General of UNESCO , which she joined in March 2017, intending to replace the Bulgarian Irina Bokova , whose mandate expires in 2017 [ 9] . On October 13, 2017, she was elected Director-General of UNESCO following a vote by the Organization’s Executive Board, receiving 30 votes to 28, cast for Qatar’s representative .

On November 10, 2017, the UNESCO General Conference approved the appointment; Azulay’s assumption of office was scheduled for November 15 [10] .
