Rugby European Cup 2016/2017

The European Rugby Cup 2016/2017 is the third European Championship Cup draw (the 22nd in terms of the Heineken Cup predecessor tournament), an international tournament organized by European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR), in which the best clubs from the most strong European championships - the English Premier League , Pro12 and Top 14 .

The final of the competition was held on May 13, 2017 at the Edinburgh Murrayfield Stadium . In the decisive match, the current winner of the Saracens and Clermont Auvergne cups met. In a stubborn confrontation, the English team managed to defend their title, winning with a score of 28:17.

Selection

In the group stage of the tournament was attended by 20 teams from the three strongest leagues in Europe, which were determined by the following criteria:

  • England: 6 best teams of the Premier League;
  • France: 6 best teams of the Top 14;
  • Pro12 (Ireland, Italy, Wales, Scotland):
    • According to the best team from each country;
    • The three best teams of the championship, not qualified by the first criterion.
  • Twentieth place went to the team that won the European Challenge Cup last season. Since the winner, the French club Montpellier Hero , who had won Harlequins in the final of the 2015/16 season with a score of 19:26, qualified according to the previous criterion, the Bordeaux-Begle team became the seventh participant from the French championship.

Group Stage

The draw for the group stage of the competition was held on June 29, 2016 in the Swiss Neuchatel [2] . In August, the dates of the group matches of the competition were announced [3] . The stadium where the tournament finals will be held was announced the year before, it was the Scottish Murrayfield Arena [4] .

Teams were divided into 4 in five groups, each played at home and away with each of the rivals. In the playoffs came five teams that took first places in their groups, and the three best teams that took second places. For the victory, the team received 4 points, for a draw 2 points. In addition, in the event of a skid of 4 or more attempts in one match, the team received a bonus point in the attack. In the event of a defeat with a difference of less than 7 points - a bonus point in defense [5] .

Playoffs

Eight teams were distributed taking into account their performance in the group part of the tournament. The best qualified will play the worst with the principle of the first with the eighth, the second with the seventh, the third with the sixth and the fourth with the fifth. Quarter finals will be held from April 1 to April 2, semi-finals - from April 22 to 23. The final will be held May 14 at the Murrayfield Stadium .
