Biography

Laura Arraya began to make progress in tennis as a child, becoming the champion of Peru, and then South America. A trainer from Chile drew attention to the girl, who offered her parents her services. Together with her trainer, Laura left for the USA, where she continued her professional training. She successfully performed in her first tournament, held in Brazil, and began her professional career from 150th place in the WTA ranking [4] .

Already in 1982, Arraya became the winner of the Japan Open - a tournament that was part of the Avon tennis tour as part of the Toyota Series. Over the next three years, she played five more times in the finals of the tournaments of the main women's professional tour in singles, and since 1985 she began to appear in doubles finals. In 1982, 1983 and 1985, Arraia participated in the matches of the Peruvian national team in the Federation Cup , in 1983 having reached the finals of the consolation tournament with the team, where the Peruvians lost to the Soviet national team . In 1984, she married the Chilean tennis player Heinz Guildemeister , and in 1988 they had a son, Heinz Jr. [5] .

The birth did not put an end to Laura Guildemeister’s career, and she returned to the court, moving from one tournament to another accompanied by her son and his nanny [5] . In March 1990, after reaching the semi-finals of a major tournament in Boca Raton (thanks to the victory over the sixth racket of the world Monica Seles ) and several titles won at the end of the previous season in tournaments of a lower rank, she reached the highest position in her career in the ranking, having risen on the 14th line. In 1991, the Guildemeister showed its best result in Grand Slam tournaments when it reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon . In the 1/8 finals, she defeated Katerina Maleeva , the 11th racket of the world, but then lost to Gabriele Sabatini, who took third place in the ranking. Laura subsequently called the quarter-finals at Wimbledon the most memorable moment of her playing career [4] .

Laura actively participated in professional tournaments until the end of 1993. Having completed her playing career, she and her brother Pablo , a former Top-30 player in the men's professional tour, opened a tennis academy in Miami [6] . Subsequently, she divorced Heinz Guildemeister and remarried, having given birth to another son from Patricio's second husband [4] . When in 2009, after a nine-year hiatus, the Peru team resumed playing in the Federation Cup, Arraya was appointed her captain [7] , but in January 2011 she left this post due to disagreements with the leadership of the national tennis federation [8] .
