Biography
Jaime Isaga began playing tennis at the age of five, attending lessons three times a week. From the age of 11, training became more intense - Jaime was engaged in tennis for three hours a day, including an hour with a personal trainer who came to his home [2] . In 1981, he won the South American Championship among boys under the age of 14, and two years later in the age group under 18 [3] . By the age of 15, Isaga was already planning a career as a professional tennis player and, with the consent of his parents, went to the United States, where he entered the tennis academy. There, his trainer was Colon Nunez, who also trained the Ecuadorian Andrés Gomez [2] . Since 1984, he began playing in the Davis Cup for the national team of Peru.
In 1985, at the age of 17, Isaga won the French Open in singles among youths and added to this title a victory in youth doubles at the Wimbledon tournament [3] . Having officially received professional status this year and taking a place in the third hundred of the ATP rating , he reached the fourth round in the main tournament of the US Open after defeating the 43rd racket of the world by Jacob Hlasek and the 21st racket of the world by David Payte before losing to Ivan Lendl (at the same time he was the only one throughout the tournament who managed to get a set from Lendl, the future champion [3] ). After that, Isaga reached the finals of the ATP Challenger tournament in West Palm, Florida, and in November already won the title in this category in Bahia, Brazil, where he also won the 20th racket of the world by Martin High . He finished his first professional season at 45th place in the Asia-Pacific Region rating and, according to its results, was recognized as the newcomer of the year [3] .
In 1987, Isaga won his first Grand Prix tournaments in Schenectady (New York) and Sao Paulo. By October 1989, he had reached the 18th place in his ATP ranking, a record for his career. This year, Isaga also reached the highest place in his career in the doubles ranking: although he could not win the titles in the main round, in his account in 1988 and 1989 there were three lost finals.
From 1991 to 1993, Isaga added to the three titles won in 1987-1988 in the Grand Prix tour, five more - already in the new ATP tour. Although he didn’t make it to the finals of the ATP tournaments in 1994, this season was his highest success at the French Open (fourth round, after defeating Michael Chang seeded 8th) and the US Open (1/4 final, after victory over the first racket of the world by Pete Sampras [2] ). In 1994, he again rose to 18th place in the ranking, over the years repeatedly finding himself at the top of the ranking among all South American players. In 1989 and 1994, he and the Peruvian team reached the playoffs of the Davis Cup World Group - the top division of this tournament, but for the first time the Peruvians lost in five games to the Australian national team , and five years later they lost to the Danes [2] .
In 1995, at 28, Isaga basically completed his professional playing career and returned to Lima, although he occasionally appeared in tournaments until 1997. At the end of his gaming career, he began a career in business. He owns a network of Sport Life gyms and sells sports equipment. In 2004, he was appointed captain of the Peruvian team in the Davis Cup [2] and in 2007, after defeating the team of Belarus, for the first time in the history of the Peruvian team brought her to the World Group - the top division of the tournament [4] . In 2010, he was replaced by the captain of the national team, Luis Orna , who participated in the 2007 World League exit [5] .
