Jekabs Kázaks ( Latvian. Jēkabs Kazaks ; February 18, 1895, Riga - November 30, 1920, ibid.) - Russian and Latvian modernist artist. One of the founders of Latvian national modernism.

Biography
Born in Riga , in the family of the janitor Peter and his wife Ede. In 1913 he graduated from a technical real school , where Julius Madernieks was a teacher of drawing. From 1913 to 1915 he studied at the Riga Art College under the leadership of Vilhelms Purvitis . Since 1914 he participated in exhibitions.
Since 1915, he was forced to continue his studies in evacuation at the Penza School of Art . He worked in the office of the committee for the supply of Latvian refugees, then returned to Latvia. From 1918 to 1919 - a drawing teacher in Aluksne . In 1919, Kazax became a member of the expressionist group.
Died November 30, 1920 from tuberculosis .
Creativity
Jekabs Kazax's works reflect the events of the 1905 revolution , the First World War and the struggle for the independence of Latvia . Under the influence of impressionism of the first decade of the 20th century, Kazax developed an individual style that is characterized by expressiveness and simplicity, generalization and even distortion of forms.
The plot of Cossacks paintings was influenced by the work of Jazeps Groswalds , and the manner of Andrea Derain .
