Train Station
In 1899, the colonial administration of Portuguese Angola began the construction of the Bengal Railway [2] - from the Atlantic coast to the borders of the Congo Free State . In the same year, Munyango Railway Station was founded as an important waypoint. The function of the railway junction remains key throughout the history of Munyango.
Political-Military History
A small African village is known in the world as the birthplace of Jonas Savimbi , the leader of the Angola rebel movement UNITA . His father Lote Savimbi was the head of the railway station) [1] . During the War of Independence , the Portuguese military unit was based in Munyango, and UNITA formations to the south.
During the Civil War, there were fierce battles between the UNITA rebels, supported by the forces of South Africa , and the armed forces of the MPLA government, supported by the Cuban expeditionary force [3] . Munyango had serious strategic importance, tanks and aircraft were used in battles [4] . In 1986, Munyango was taken by UNITA and Jonas Savimbi defiantly held a press conference in his small homeland [5] .
As a result of the fighting, Munyango was mostly destroyed.
Post-war reconstruction
After the end of the civil war, it was possible to restore the railway line through Munyango only in 2011 [6] . Social facilities were built [7] , a drinking water purification system was established [8] . A special housing program has been launched for officials and public sector employees [9] . A settlement with 4-5 thousand inhabitants received the status of a city.
By administrative affiliation, Munyango belongs to the municipality of Quemba in the province of Bie [10] . Power belongs to the party MPLA. The administration is led by Margarida Issula.
