History
On May 8, 1965, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR decided to present the city with the Order of Lenin and the Golden Star medal . At that time, Sevastopol was already a hero city (from May 1, 1945 ), the decision confirmed this status.
In honor of this, on November 3, 1977, an obelisk was discovered on Cape Khrustalny. This was a common practice for Soviet cities, similar structures were to be located in each Hero City. The monument in Sevastopol was the highest in height.
Vladimir Shavshin [3] claimed that the obelisk was created “hastily, by the next anniversary - the 60th anniversary of the Great October Revolution .
The obelisk is made in the form of a stylized bayonet and sail from monolithic reinforced concrete , lined with Alminsky tiles, according to the authors, it symbolizes the community of the army and navy . "
The construction stands on a grand foundation, the obelisk is 60.2 meters high.
In 1978, guns from the First Defense of Sevastopol were installed at the foot of the obelisk, which later moved to the museum.
The imperfection of construction technologies led to the partial collapse of the monument at the beginning of the XXI century . In 2010, proposals were made for the demolition of the obelisk, due to the fact that the cape is built up with multi-storey buildings that partially cover the Bayonet [4] . At the site of the monument, the construction of an observation deck was supposed.
