Biography
He graduated from the National Conservatory of Chile (1912) as a violinist, student of Jose Varalli, also studied with Enrique Soro and Luigi Stefano Dzhardy (harmony and composition).
He made his debut on the concert stage as a young violinist in 1903. A year before graduating from the conservatory, he began to teach in it. In 1915, together with Alberto Guerrero, he played the piano trio at the invitation of Michael Peña , who performed long Latin American tours, in the same year he took the console of the accompanist in the orchestra of the municipal theater of Santiago and remained in that position until 1927. In 1927, he conducted the orchestra at the wedding of President of Chile Carlos Ibáñez del Campo . In the years 1924-1932. headed the chamber orchestra of the Bach Society ( Spanish: Sociedad Bach ), to a large extent performed precisely the music of Johann Sebastian Bach .
In 1928, after the reform of the National Conservatory, he headed it and remained in this position until 1943, simultaneously in 1931-1932. was dean of the faculty of arts at the National University .
In 1941, he became the first leader of the Chilean Symphony Orchestra and led the team until 1947.
