Game Brief
The release took place on July 28, 2006 in Europe for the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable platforms . The game has a career mode, which began to appear regularly in the games of the series from the 2004 game . Formula One 06 runs on a slightly improved engine from last year's game. This is also the last Formula 1 simulator that was released for PlayStation 2. A little later, exclusively for PlayStation 3 , Formula One Championship Edition , an improved version of this game, was released.
In career mode, the player begins his journey with one of the weakest teams: Super Aguri , Toro Rosso or Midland F1 . There are such roles within the team as a test pilot, co-pilot and first pilot. The role of the player may vary depending on how he will work in and after test sessions. Test sessions are held on tracks such as Catalunya , Silverstone or Magny-Cours , where you can also ride in the rain.
During test sessions, the player will have to beat the set time for several laps. Also, sometimes the task is to exceed the accumulated target time, where you need to drive a given number of circles, and the time of each circle is added to the total.
The player is given the opportunity to go through 5 seasons in career mode, during which he can become the World Champion or win the Constructors Cup. The chances of this increase significantly if you play for one of the top teams: Renault , Ferrari , McLaren or Honda .
Also, if certain conditions are met, the player can open certain prizes. For example, such a reward as an additional training track, namely Jerez, opens for a victory in the Grand Prix. In the game you can look at the prizes won in the trophy room. These include cups issued for victory in the race, as well as the World Cup and Constructors' Cup. The machine that brought the player the championship is also displayed on the trophy.
The game has a new qualification system which consists of three segments. In addition, a warm-up circle appeared, and the opponents' AI was improved compared to previous games in the series.
In 2006, Formula 1 cars were equipped with V8 engines, with the exception of the Toro Rosso car STR1 , which was powered by a V10 engine. These subtleties were taken into account in the game, each car has the correct sound.
A new damage system has appeared, providing for punctures, damage to the front wing and nose. You can also damage the rear wing and wheels.
Network game was cut shortly before the release of the game. It was expected that for the first time cross-platform multiplayer will work, which will allow PSP and PS2 users to compete, but this was not implemented as a result. Studio Liverpool said that one of the reasons for this was the lack of time. For the same reason, Formula One 07 was canceled due to the release of Formula One Championship Edition for the PlayStation 3 .
