History

Ya. S. Polyakov

The participant of the Patriotic War of 1812, Georgy Benardaki, in the late 1810s - early 1820s built a corner one-story mansion for himself on the side of Varvatsievsky Lane (now Lermontovsky ). In the mansion, his family lived before moving to St. Petersburg after the death of their parents. The house on Petrovskaya Street and the estate on the shore of the Sea of Azov worth 5.5 thousand rubles, owned by Benardaki, was bought in 1874 by a large industrialist and landowner Yakov Solomonovich Polyakov . In Taganrog, Polyakov was engaged in the construction of a railway from Rostov-on-Don , financed the construction of the railway station building , was the founder of the Don Land Bank and co-founder of the St. Petersburg-Azov and Azov-Don commercial banks. Inviting Petersburg architects, he built and expanded the acquired house and founded the Don Land Bank in it. A member of the Taganrog Construction Committee E. Aleinikov also participated in the reconstruction of the house. Later, an extension was made connecting this house with the neighboring one [2] .

In 1918, the bank was nationalized, after which the house of Y. S. Polyakov was occupied by various administrative institutions: the district executive committee, city executive committee, Leninsky district executive committee; during the years of German occupation - the city magistrate. Since 1989, the building has been formally transferred as the second building to the art gallery, but in fact it houses the city House of Children's Creativity [3] .
