Elias Salupeto Pena ( port. Elias Salupeto Pena ; April 9, 1952, Caricoke - November 2, 1992, Luanda ) is an Angolan politician, one of the leaders of the UNITA rebel movement. An active participant in the civil war in Angola and the negotiation process between UNITA and MPLA . Nephew and close associate of Jonas Savimbi . Arlindo Pena's older brother. Killed in the Halloween Massacre .

Origin
Born in a family of tribal activists ovimbundu . Judith Pena , the mother of Eliash Pena, was the sister of Jonas Savimbi , founder and leader of the UNITA movement. Father - Isaac Pires Pena - was a school teacher and administrator of the evangelical mission hospital in the village of Shilesso (province of Bie) [1] . The younger brother, Arlindo Pena , has been a UNITA fighter since he was 13 years old.
Eliash Pena received his primary education in the Shilesso mission. Then he graduated from school in Lubango . In 1974 he joined UNITA.
UNITA Politician
Eliash Pena quickly became a leader in the youth organization UNITA, demonstrated effectiveness in mobilizing the asset. After the declaration of independence of Angola and the outbreak of civil war in 1975, Elish Pena joined the General Staff of the UNITA Armed Forces . He participated in battles with the MPLA troops. Commentators characterized Eliash Pena as a person who enjoys Savimbi’s high confidence and noted his “constant militancy” [2] .
In 1976, Pena was wounded in the battles for Huambo and was evacuated to Zambia for treatment. Then he received an agricultural education in Côte d'Ivoire .
He returned to Angola in 1987 . He was appointed UNITA Minister of Agriculture. Supervised agricultural policy in the territories controlled by UNITA [3] .
In the late 1980s, negotiations began between the MPLA government and the UNITA movement to end the civil war. Since 1989, Eliash Pena led the UNITA delegation to these negotiations. Consisted in a joint commission, participated in the development of the Biessse agreements .
Halloween Death
In September 1992, in accordance with the Biessse Accords, the first multi-party parliamentary and presidential elections were held. UNITA participated in them, Jonas Savimbi claimed the post of president. However, the victory of the MPLA and its leader, Jose Eduardo dos Santos , was officially announced.
The opposition did not recognize the announced results and demanded a recount. Eliash Pena was in Luanda and negotiated with the government on behalf of Savimbi.
On October 30, 1992, MPLA party militants and police launched the Halloween Massacre - the massacres of opposition supporters, most notably UNITA [4] . Eliash Pena was gunshot, was captured by government security forces and killed in a police station. Dead Elias Pena was shown on state television [5] .
UNITA Vice-Chairman Jeremias Šitunda also died. Arlindo Pena, Eliash’s brother, was wounded, but managed to leave Luanda [6] .
Burial issue
After the end of the civil war, representatives of UNITA repeatedly demanded that the remains of Eliash Pena be returned for burial in Andulo . This demand was made, in particular, by the brother of Eliash Pena - Araujo Kasuke Pena, who served in UNITA as secretary of UNITA under the protocol [7] .
