History
Alef League in Israel was created in the season 1949-50, a year after independence. However, the financial crisis and hostilities led to the omission of the 1950-51 season. In the 1951-52 season, the league resumed functioning and was named League Alef. The 1952-53 season was also missed, and only in the 1953-54 season did the competition resume. In the 1955-56 season, the National League received the status of the top division, and therefore League Alef became the second strongest division. In the summer of 1976, after the restructuring, the League of Artsit became the second division, and the League of Alef became the third. In 1999, the Premier League became the top division, the National League was the first , and League Alef remained the third strongest division.
Structure
To date, League Alef is divided into 2 regional subdivisions, Southern and Northern. There are 16 clubs in each division, and the division winners get a ticket to the National League . The second-place teams play the playoffs, and the winner gets the right to fight for an extra ticket to the National League with the 14th-place team there. The teams that took the last places are transferred to the fourth strongest division - League Bet.
